The Fight

The spotlight is centered in the stadium tonight Everyone is locked and loaded for the big fight He was the challenger and he was quite slim Yet he went by the name of Big Jim He was outwardly bold but he wasn't too old He wanted somethin' more than the championship gold No he was fighting for the ultimate prize To see complete defeat in his opponent's eyes He made his entrance through the juvenile crowd The air in the building was thunderously loud He cracked his knuckles, his fist clenched and curled As he stared into the eyes of the champion of the world Ding, ding, ding, he heard the bell ring He cocked back his arm and took the first swing His fist went flying but it only hit air He was met with the champion's icy stare And that was the last thing that he saw Before his teeth were knocked out of his jaw He was launched backwards, crashed to the ground The crowd was dead silent, there wasn't a sound But just when the crowd thought that he'd been beat He pulled himself back up onto his feet The champion paid him with a devilish grin It was well-known he could get under anyone's skin Jim wiped off the blood that was smeared on his lip Threw out his last grip on good sportsmanship He swung once again but was met with a punch The whole crowd was able to hear his bones crunch The champion landed eleven more blows Until the fettucine spewed out of his nose He started to sweat them beads of regret But the battle was young, it wasn't over yet He went for a jab but was stabbed with surprise As the champion's glove left a tattoo 'round his eyes His nerves started boiling, he started to seethe He just had a second to let himself breathe His face was kissed by the champion's fist He tried to give one back but he missed He scratched and he clawed, fought for his life Each jab was a stab just as sharp as a knife The champion's pounding was starting to mount How long until Jim would be down for the count? Is he gonna give in or take it on the chin? Everybody's wondering who's going to win Suddenly Jim shifted into fourth gear He pounced at the champ and he bit off his ear The champion staggered, he let out a howl His pain turned to rage as he started to growl He balled up his fist like a boppin' balloon And slugged Jim and sent him right up to the moon Or maybe it was so hard that he made it to Mars Wherever he went, Jim was sure seeing stars He heard the sweet lullaby of the crowd's roar As his face hit the cold hard pillow of the floor And as he laid there halfway knocked out His head throbbing with shame and doubt It doesn't matter what's the tale of the tape There ain't no winning, you can only escape But then something happened, he felt it inside Call it strength or resistence or power or pride Whatever it was, it was electrifying He was going to do it or he would die trying He groped for the last of his slow-dying hope He pulled himself up by the aid of the ropes He stood there with his brains mashed like spuds Out of his mouth ran a flood of blood He willed his last swing from the strength of God As the champion blocked it and gave him a nod He gave him a smack, a whack and a crack Jim fell on his back and he faded to black The champion stood tall, the crowd did yell As the man in the stripes rang the bell When everything settled, he was helped to his feet Where he was to shake hands and accept defeat And as Jim stood there with the crowd going mad He knew he had given it all that he had And Jim breathed a sigh as he dropped his gloves For he'd learned that you cannot pick a fight with love
