At the call of the wide, blue ocean, toung James Bartley took up his post
And he learned his trade in the ships on the waves 
Off the New South Wales coast

1891 in Eden... the captain of the 'Star of the East'
Was recruiting strong men to go a-whalin'
And hunt the world's largest beast

Come a whalin' men, come you all to sea
They spied a whale upon the waves, they found him easily
The beast looked them in the eye: "Just you let me be"
 "Cause if I'm going to die this day, I'll take you down with me!"

The harpoon shaft hit the whale's flank, its blood streamed into the brine
To eight hundred feet, the whale dived deep
Then it rose at the end of their line

With a mighty smash, the whale cleaved James Bartley's vessel in two
The men overboard were pulled from the wreck 
But they were missing some crew

Come a whalin' men, come you all to sea
They spied a whale upon the waves, they found him easily
The beast looked them in the eye: "Just you let me be"
 "Cause if I'm going to die this day, I'll take you down with me!"

For almost a day they all waited... then just as the sun was to set
The seawater stirred as the whale appeared
To take its final dying breath

The men set to work on its carcass, the body they had to divide
Sliced open its stomach and found there a boot
Then the rest of James Bartley inside

Young Jamie was only just living
His skin and hair bleached deathly pale
It was several more weeks before he could speak
About being swallowed by a great whale
