"Deutschland" debuted at number one in Germany, making it Rammstein's second number-one single after "Pussy" in 2009. It also reached number one on the charts in Hungary and Switzerland, and within the top 10 in several other countries.

Despite the controversy, the song was generally well received by music critics, who praised its layered approach to lyric writing and its bold presentation.

The video, with a duration of approximately nine and a half minutes, presents a condensed version of German history, starting from the Roman era up to the present day. Conveying the nation's history with a grim aesthetic, it touches controversial periods including the Holocaust and divided Germany era.

The announcement of "Deutschland" as a single was accompanied by a 35-second video clip that stirred controversy due to its brief depiction of band members dressed as concentration camp inmates, which provoked accusations of trivializing the Holocaust.

Rammstein members have acknowledged the controversy but insisted that their intention was to illustrate the "painful aspects" of German history and make people think about the past rather than to offend or trivialize it.
