Hal Hammer, Jr., was the son of performing parents. His mother sang in front of the "Big Bands" while his father was a drummer. Hal traveled with the Alan Freed Rock 'n' Roll cavalcade and did some studio work with Matt Murphy, on recordings for Chuck Berry. Switching from rock n roll to blues was a move that Hammer did because of Matt "Guitar" Murphy's mentoring, he said. Hal has played with many of the alltime greats, like BB King, Freddie King, Ike Turner, and Albert King, to name a few. He proudly credits those stars for helping him over the rough spots in his musical career and cites their kindness and influence as reasons why he played for some seventy five years!
