Cleavage Lines

“If we let a crystallized mineral block fall it will break, but not in a random way; the cracks will appear along the cleavage lines, wich directions, even if they were invisible until then, are already determined by the crystal’s structure, and are unchangeable…” Cleavage Lines are born from the encounter of two of the founders,Luigi Tamburrino (Guitar) and Rita di Pietro (Voice), both former psychology students, with this aphorism. Before that, they both were busy with other bands, mainly playing covers of famous songs. That day they realized, as if it was some kind of epiphany, that they could do something more with their voice and music, and use them to translate the weakness of the human being, so frail and broken, and make it echo, hoping that it could resonate in the listeners and that some lines, maybe, could reconnect and become strength. From that day this desire became the cornerstone of their lyrics and melodies. The first songs come by quickly, almost as if the voices of eachother’s charachters were telling their discomfort to some strangers met in a crowded train wagon. They speak quickly, sometimes stumbling over their words, telling about family distress, failed loves, difficulties to find their place in the world, griefs and digital loneliness. Words mix with emotions, the voice is cracked by rage, delusion and sadness, but in the end hope appears, the hope of being able to overcome the trauma and start again. Hope and perseverance also are two other cornerstones for the band and its founders, who waited patiently for the right formation to integrate their ideas. The actual formation comes as a result of lucky encounters with guitarist Francesco Ciccone and bassist Daniele Chianese first, and drummer Isabella Ida Mazzei shortly after. The feeling is almost immediate and finally the two founders get what they have been looking for, musicians capable of giving voice to the songs, instead of themselves, or their ego. The songs gain a solid rhythm section, the arrangements get richer, dynamics and solos get well-finished. You can hear the result with your ears, but you can also feel it in your heart, because, among those voices, you could find your own, and you could understand what it’s trying to infuse.
