About I Just Wasn't Made for These Times

"I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher for American rock band the Beach Boys about depression and social alienation. Also produced and sung by Wilson, it appears as the eleventh track on their 1966 album Pet Sounds. He described it as "about a guy who was crying out because he thought he was too advanced, and that he'd eventually have to leave people behind." Its chorus features Spanish-sung background vocals: "Oh, ¿cuándo seré? Un día seré" ("When will I be? One day I will be") The song is an early work of psychedelic rock. Its instrumentation includes harpsichord, muted bass guitar, and a theremin soundalike instrument called the Electro-Theremin. It is the first instance of an Electro-Theremin being used in popular music and the first in rock music to feature a theremin-like instrument.

I keep looking for a place to fit
Where I can speak my mind
I've been trying hard to find the people
That I won't leave behind

They say I got brains
But they ain't doing me no good
I wish they could

Each time things start to happen again
I think I got something good goin' for myself
But what goes wrong

Sometimes I feel very sad
Sometimes I feel very sad
(Can't find nothin' I can put my heart and soul into)
Sometimes I feel very sad
(Can't find nothin' I can put my heart and soul into)

I guess I just wasn't made for these times

Every time I get the inspiration
To go change things around
No one wants to help me look for places
Where new things might be found

Where can I turn when my fair weather friends cop out
What's it all about

Each time things start to happen again
I think I got something good goin' for myself
But what goes wrong

Sometimes I feel very sad
Sometimes I feel very sad
(Can't find nothin' I can put my heart and soul into)
Sometimes I feel very sad
(Can't find nothin' I can put my heart and soul into)

I guess I just wasn't made for these times
I guess I just wasn't made for these times
I guess I just wasn't made for these times
I guess I just wasn't made for these times
I guess I just wasn't made for these times
I guess I just wasn't made for these times

By the mid 1960s, Brian Wilson's growing creative ambition and songwriting ability would dominate the group's musical direction. The primarily Wilson-composed Pet Sounds album and "Good Vibrations" single (both released in 1966) featured a complex, intricate and multi-layered sound that wa… more »
