About Back Home

Back Home in Derry is an Irish rebel song written by Bobby Sands while imprisoned in HM Maze. The song has been covered by multiple artists, most notably by Christy Moore in his 1984 album Ride On. It is usually sung to a melody inspired by Gordon Lightfoot's famous 1976 song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald“. The lyrics describe the voyage of Irish rebels, convicted to exile in Australia, in the aftermath of the Irish Rebellion of 1803. The narrator describes the feelings of the men as they sail away from Ireland, in precarious conditions, while the chorus is a lament of longing for Derry. The city appears to be used as a symbol for one's hometown, as historically, the Irish Rebellion of 1803 was centered around Dublin. Throughout the song, the narrator describes the harsh treatment Irish prisoners endured under English rule, and the execution of Robert Emmet is mentioned. The narrator is ultimately deported to van Diemen's land, where he endures a harsh existence of servitude and violence.

When she walks into the room
They look up to see her face
All the glitter falls on her
And the room's her stage

Don't you think you've had enough?
Do the claws make sores?
Take my hand and come away
And I'll take you home

I won't turn around
Can't be afraid
Taking you all the way back home
Innocence gone
Can't be the same
Taking you all the way back home

Back home

Will the world still be the same
Even if you're gone
When the pillers start to fade
And the room's just walls

Don't you think you've had enough?
Do the claws make sores?
Take my hand and come away
And I'll take you home

I won't turn around
Can't be afraid
Taking you all the way back home
Innocence gone
Can't be the same
Taking you all the way

All the way
All the way

Don't you think you've had enough?
What's the gun there for?
Take my hand and fly away
And I'll take you home

Don't you think you've had enough?
What's the gun there for?
Take my hand and come away
And I'll take you

Don't turn around
Can't be afraid
Take you all the way back home
Innocence gone
Can't be the same
Take you all the way

I'll take you all the way
I'll take you all the way back
I'll take you all the way
I'll take you all the way
(Back home)

I'll take you all the way
(Back home)
I'll take you all the way
(Back home)
I'll take you all the way
(Back home)
I'll take you all the way
