About Young Savage

"Young Savage" is the second single by Ultravox!. It was released as a single by Island Records on 28 May 1977, during a time of experimentation to define a new sound for the band, in advance of their second album. The song was made in a punk style, although the band denied it was a 'punk' song, pointing out that Billy Currie's keyboard playing is in a psychedelic style. It's their first release from the Ha!-Ha!-Ha! sessions, and is notably different from the material on their first album Ultravox!, which had more glam songs. A definitive song in the band's development, and a popular single at the time, the 2006 reissue edition of the latter album (IMCD 325) contains it as bonus track. 'Young Savage' was also improbably named as record of the week on Mark & Lard's Radio 1 show in 2002. The B-Side of 'Young Savage' is a live version of "Slip Away", recorded during a gig at The Rainbow in London in 1977. 'Young Savage' is one of four live tracks featured on the Retro EP (IEP 8), released on 10 February 1978. This performance was recorded at the Marquee in London.

The Jekyll-Hyde of you
I can't survive the tide of you
The vicious style of love, the whining
Pits and pendulums of lying
I don't see how you survive in
Hard-line worlds you're advertising
Sneaky features, facing, waiting
City sex is so frustrating

Young savage
Young savage
She's like a steel wall
Speaks like a dance hall
Young savage
Young savage
Anything goes where no-one knows your name

The mirror love of vixens
Gets over the mask of victims
Money rents you insulation
Tenderness, asphyxiation
Someone else's flesh to borrow
Sling it from your bed tomorrow
Live too fast for love or sorrow
Look behind the face, it's hollow

Young savage
Young savage
She's like a steel wall
Speaks like a dance hall
Young savage
Young savage
Anything goes where no-one knows your name

Young savage
Young savage
She's like a steel wall
Speaks like a dance hall
Young savage
Young savage
Anything goes where no-one knows your name

The broken heart of you
Who stole, who stole a part of you
Changing blossoms into piss
And taking bites from every kiss
The past is dead, tomorrow's too far
All the chemicals that bar us
Coloured hair, cheap tattoos
That tell you all their points of view

Young savage
Young savage
She's like a steel wall
Speaks like a dance hall
Young savage
Young savage
Anything goes where no-one knows your name

Condemned to be a stranger
Subway dweller, dead-end danger
Peeking through the dust of friends
Who never gave, they'd only lend
Every sneer is thrown away
With practised gestures of disdain
The outlaw stance is so pedantic
Hate the world, it's so romantic

Young savage
Young savage
She's like a steel wall
Speaks like a dance hall
Young savage
Young savage
Anything goes where no-one knows your name
