Jose de Sousa Mendes was a Portuguese diplomat and hero of the Holocaust. He served as the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux, France, during World War II and defied his government's orders to save thousands of Jewish and other refugees by issuing them visas to Portugal. His courageous actions saved the lives of many and earned him recognition as a Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial center in Jerusalem.
